Welcome to Las Balsas

Journey into the mountain´s heart

There is a whole world of activities beyond skiing, and this trip takes you to explore them on a journey right into the heart of the Andes, where the most astonishing landscapes await, always covered with permanent snows. This adventure was created to change the perspective about winter´s activities, and certainly will.

Winter activities can go way beyond the ski park, and when we say way beyond we are talking about crossing the frontier of the standard routes. Let´s start.

Snow equipment and waterproof trekking boots are required, as the tour offers snowshoes and ski sticks for a safer and simpler trip. The degree of difficulty is medium to low.

This adventure starts when crossing the argentine custom point. This procedure is needed when getting out of the country, as the route is located on the border zone between Argentina and Chile. Getting there is easy by car, or by transfer.

This is the starting point of a path that leads right to Cerro Mirador, just over the Chilean border.

The magic of this path starts going through a silvery forest covered with snow that leads directly to a wonderful natural viewpoint where at least three or four volcanoes, located between Argentina and Chile, can be appreciated. Puyehue and Osorno are the leading ones, ruling this landscape with their impressive presence.

This is the best spot to seat and enjoy a snack, eat some chocolate, or drink a hot beverage and just admire the panoramic view of the thousand-year-old volcanoes in all their majesty.

The whole trip takes 3 to 5 hours and gets directly into the Andes´ wintry heart, where every heartbeat is a unique opportunity to discover a peculiar landscape and feel the beauty of these permanent snows surrounded by the most astonishing nature.

This adventure is guided by the mountain and trekking local guide Lola Moreno, willing to discover and share every nature´s outstanding touch or detail.

“It´s like going to Antarctica, an unbelievable landscape and the hugeness of the mountain are revealed with every step. The greatness of the Andes and huge volcanoes will surround you all the way”, says Lola, to make this trip even more inspiring.

As after every grate adventure there is always a well-deserved rest awaiting, in our hotel there´s a fantastic spa ready to relax and get strengths back with a warm massage or a nice swim in our heated pool.

Chef Recommends

by Franco Pautasso

Lamb from Patagonia

In this edition, our Chef suggest us a very Patagonic choice from our restaurant’s menu, that includes lamb, as a very traditional Patagonian plate, with a morel sauce, typical from the region. This main course is paired with a magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon wine. At the foot we include some notes from the Winery.

Main Course

Lamb entrecote, eggplant purée, sweet potato and quinoa croquettes, roasted vegetables and morel sauce
Paired with Mendel Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: The complex aroma of the wine, that combines some spices, red fruits and the french oak barrel notes, became the perfect match for the richness of aromas and flavors that are present in this main course. The unctuousness and intensity of the dish, both from the ingredients used, its cooks and the accompaniments, became the ideal partner of the Cabernet Sauvignon, wine of great personality with firm, elegant and silky tannins.

Enrique Napp, a professional traveller related with classic cars and motorcycles, is a traditional guest of Las Balsas, that every time he develop a new trip around Patagonia, he always try to get and excuse to come and visit us for some days.

In this case the excuse was the 800km, a classic motorcycle race that had place around Villa La Angostura by the end of March 2017. Enrique Napp said “Las Balsas has a unique location and a very sophisticated style from the simplicity, a quality that very few places achieve. To develop my activity, which consists of drawing the most outstanding classic vehicles, it is an ideal habitat because the immensity of cared spaces for in an unrivaled landscape gives me the inspiration to achieve any challenge.”

The main motivation of this particular traveler, passionate lover of the road trips by car, is to link, by travelling through essential routes of unforgettable landscapes with the best gastronomy and lodging in the world, like a nice tribute to Route du Bonheur by Relais & Chateaux. The excuse: To get through his art to the most outstanding events of classic cars all over the world.
